Check the Dutch application requirements

A foreign passport or a job in the Netherlands does not by itself determine approval. The Dutch Blue page lists requirements including age 18 or over, a Dutch residential address, no negative BKR registration and gross annual income of at least €30,000. Always check the particular card you intend to apply for.

Keep address and income details current. Meeting published requirements does not guarantee acceptance: American Express assesses the application and may request additional information.

Prepare for identity verification

American Express uses online identification through iDIN and the upload of a valid passport or identity card. iDIN works through your own bank's familiar login and is not a payment.

Have your identity document, address, income details and bank login ready. Ask AMEX first if your bank or document is not supported.

Consider your everyday payment habits

American Express publishes a directory of shops and other places accepting its cards. Check your own supermarket, transport, restaurants and regular online purchases; do not assume every merchant accepts the card.

Keep another payment method available. Compare cards using only purchases you would already make and can actually pay for with the card. Additional spending to earn points rarely improves the choice.

Choose benefits you will use

Start with three questions: do you prefer flexible points or Flying Blue Miles, how often do you travel and what fee fits your budget? Then compare benefits you realistically expect to use.

Check how repayment works. For example, the Flying Blue Gold page requires the full balance to be paid monthly; instalments are not available. Review exchange costs and the applicable card terms before making foreign-currency purchases.

Three familiar situations

These are starting points, rather than fixed recommendations. Check current fees and your own payment habits.
