Understand the status steps first

When you move up, the required XP are deducted and a new twelve-month qualification period begins. From Explorer, you reach Silver before Gold; 180 XP is not the entire journey from Explorer. Remaining XP carry over under Flying Blue’s rules.

Check your personal period in your account. The status explanation below was checked on 13 October 2026.

Start with trips you already plan to take

KLM calculates flight XP using distance and travel class. The fare also matters on certain routes. Each flight in a connecting itinerary is counted separately. Consult the current XP table for your booking; assuming every Economy ticket earns the same amount can be misleading.

List your planned trips and qualification period first. A connection may earn more XP, but it also takes time. Weigh that against the convenience of flying directly, rather than looking only at points.

Extra SAF is a separate contribution

KLM states that Flying Blue members receive 1 XP for every €10 or 2,000 Miles voluntarily contributed to extra SAF. This is additional to the environmental surcharge in the ticket. You can add it when booking or through My Trip.

Treat this as a paid choice. Work out how many XP you actually need and compare the contribution with the personal value of reaching or retaining status.

Donate Miles to charities

The official Flying Blue donation directory lets you give Miles to participating charities. Flying Blue describes a reward of 1 XP per 2,000 Miles donated. At that ratio, donating 10,000 Miles earns 5 XP. You do not need to book a flight; this is separate from adding SAF to a ticket.

Choose an available project and check the current Miles/XP ratio and conditions before confirming. Donated Miles are no longer available for a reward: consider that trade-off when topping up a small XP gap. Check the credit in your account before your qualification period ends.

A card can add annual XP

The Dutch Flying Blue American Express cards offer 15 XP annually with Silver, 30 with Gold and 60 with Platinum. These are ongoing card benefits, not automatic Flying Blue status. Purchases earn Miles; check any promotional extra XP separately.

Avoid choosing a card solely to close a status gap. Include its annual fee and other benefits. A first-year bonus does not automatically make the card suitable in later years.

Plan without forcing extra spending

Note your current XP, deadline and confirmed trips. Check the terms and when additional XP are credited. Only then decide whether an extra contribution makes sense. For example, as an Explorer with 90 XP and another 5 XP from planned trips, you are 5 XP short of Silver. At the ratio quoted above, donating 10,000 Miles would fill that gap. Consider the value of those Miles and whether the credit will arrive before your deadline.
