Choosing a card
American Express Gold or Platinum: which suits you?
Compare Dutch Amex Gold and Platinum fees, lounges and benefits. When are Platinum’s extra €660 a year worth considering?

Gold versus Platinum at a glance
This guide compares the regular Dutch consumer Gold and Platinum cards. Flying Blue Gold and Platinum are different products. Start with Gold if you want some travel benefits at a lower fee. Consider Platinum if you will regularly use its additional facilities. Neither is automatically the best choice.
Annual amounts below are twelve times the monthly fee, not a required annual commitment. AMEX states that both cards can be cancelled monthly and that the outstanding balance must be paid in full each month. Existing memberships may have different fees; check your statement.
| Feature | Gold | Platinum |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly / annual fee | €20 / €240 | €75 / €900 |
| Normal points earning | 1 Membership Rewards point per €1 | 1 Membership Rewards point per €1 |
| Lounge access | 4 included Priority Pass visits per membership year | Global Lounge Collection; programme-specific entry rules |
| Privium | Not included | Privium Plus for the main cardholder |
| Dining for 2 in 2026 | 1 of the 3 dining periods | Once in each of the 3 dining periods |
| Optional extra Platinum card | Not applicable | €10 a month extra (€120 a year) |

When Gold could suit you
Suppose you take a few trips a year, would occasionally like a lounge and can use a participating restaurant during a Dining for 2 period. Gold is a sensible starting point for comparison. Its lower fee leaves less value to recover through benefits, but €240 is still a recurring cost.
Count lounge admissions rather than holidays. Gold’s four included Priority Pass admissions are shared between you and any guests. Check your membership year and remaining admissions in the Priority Pass app. Additional admissions are charged; some lounges do not allow guests. Registration and a confirmed boarding pass are required.

When Platinum is worth considering
If you travel regularly and would otherwise pay for airport facilities, compare the extra convenience with the higher fee. Platinum includes Privium Plus for the main cardholder and access through the Global Lounge Collection. Check registration, your airport and terminal, guest rules and each lounge’s current entry conditions before counting on access.
Hotel benefits can matter if the participating hotels fit trips you already plan. Platinum lists hotel status benefits and booking programmes, but that does not make every booking cheaper or guarantee every upgrade. Compare the same hotel, room and cancellation terms before assigning a value.
Travelling as a couple? With an optional extra Platinum card, the combined fee becomes €85 a month, or €1,020 over twelve months. That is €780 more than Gold’s basic annual fee. Check which benefits the extra card actually provides rather than doubling the main card’s package.

Is Platinum worth the extra €660?
Compare only the extra value over Gold. Benefits available on both cards do not close the price gap. Neither do benefits you already receive through another membership or would never pay for. Your personal value may be much lower than a provider’s advertised package value.
Illustration, not a valuation of the benefits: suppose you would personally pay €250 a year for additional airport convenience, €150 for extra lounge use beyond Gold and €100 for dining you would otherwise buy. Together that is €500, leaving €160 of the €660 fee difference uncovered. If the benefits overlap, reduce the estimate further. With the extra Platinum card, the gap in this example is €280.
Both cards normally earn 1 point per euro. At €18,000 of eligible ordinary spending a year, that means 18,000 points with either card, before promotions. Higher spending alone therefore does not recover Platinum’s higher fee. Points have no single guaranteed redemption value; avoid spending more just to earn them.

Dining for 2 has booking windows
Under the 2026 terms, Gold can be used during one of three dining periods and Platinum once during each of the three. Each redemption is a set two-course menu for two at a participating restaurant. Book through the Amex Experiences app; places are limited and drinks or other extras are paid separately.
The allowance is per card account: an extra card does not create another dining allowance. You cannot use it as cash or simply walk in. The cited terms cover 2026 and may change. If you join partway through the year, count only the remaining periods you can actually use, not three freely selectable dinners.

Check insurance before assigning it a value
Both cards have insurance terms with conditions and exclusions. The currently linked group policies require an active card and describe when other cover takes priority. Read the particular section for your claim: payment requirements, insured persons, trip length, excesses and exclusions matter as much as the headline maximum.
For example, the cancellation sections specify how transport or accommodation must be purchased; they also address rewards bookings and payment of taxes or surcharges. Do not assume every trip is covered simply because you hold the card. Compare the policy with existing travel cover and ask the insurer about your situation before cancelling another policy.

When neither card is the right starting point
If you rarely use travel benefits, already receive lounge access elsewhere, or want the lowest possible fixed costs, include cheaper cards in the comparison. Check acceptance at the places where you normally shop and keep another payment method available.
If you cannot comfortably pay the full balance each month, these benefits do not solve that problem. And if your main goal is Flying Blue Miles or annual card XP, compare the Flying Blue cards separately rather than choosing a regular Gold or Platinum because of its name.

Choose the card first, then check the offer
Public offers, referral offers and upgrades for existing members are separate routes with their own eligibility and spending conditions. Compare any temporary bonus after deciding whether the ongoing fee suits you. A first-year promotion is not recurring value and does not affect Cardselect’s match score.
Our card pages show the separately checked offers and their dates. Read the relevant application terms before applying; this guide does not promise a particular bonus or upgrade eligibility.
